When you go out to breakfast in Madrid, the most common item that you are going to find is toast with pureed tomato, olive oil and salt. It took me (Julie) a year and a half to be willing to try this. I usually opted for the chocolate croissant or just stuck with my cafe con leche (coffee with milk). However, one morning as I had breakfast with two Spanish friends, they encouraged me to give it a try. I took my piece of toast, poured on the olive oil and then sprinkled my salt. Finally, I spooned the pureed tomato on top and took my first bit. It was okay. Too bad they didn’t have a chocolate croissant at this cafe, I thought. I finished my breakfast and began having one here or there when I met these ladies for coffee.
Fast forward a few months and now I crave my tostada con tomate. It is delicious! Chad, who isn’t a big tomato fan, is even getting into it. You should try it, and don’t wait as long as I did.
