Blessed by spiritual gifts

Have you spent much time recently with someone who passionately uses their God-given spiritual gifts? I have, and today I decided that it is awe-inspiring to watch and to receive. Chad and I have had the privilege to interact on this Home Assignment with a couple who uses their gifts of encouragement and prayer to powerfully bless the body of Christ.

Maybe our experience is unique. Maybe our limited interactions with them are unusual. Maybe we’re the only tired, thirsty souls who came across their path.

I don’t think so. I think God is using this couple in such incredible, life-altering ways and that daily they are being obedient to God, using their gifts and joyfully watching as God transforms lives right before their eyes. Truly, that is how powerfully we have been affected by our brief interactions with them.

This couple knows their spiritual gifts. They are sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit to use their spiritual gifts. They look for opportunities to bless others.

My goodness, we have been blessed. This man has put his hands on our shoulders and our son and prayed over us the four or five times we have seen him. His wife is praying for specific requests we have shared with them and continues to look for more ways to pray over our lives. We have received two or three emails with several sentences of encouraging words. Yesterday, a text and a phone call were filled with ministry encouragement that is going to stick with us for a long time.

Did all of that take a lot of time? Nope. Has it been hugely impactful in our lives? Yep.

Today we heard the man share the story of how he learned that he had the gift of encouragement. As we listened, we both blinked tears away. We have been touched by this man’s use of his spiritual gifts and by his continual, faithful sensitivity to God’s leading. Literal tears of gratitude. They were also tears of joy. It is a beautiful, awe-inspiring, God-glorifying thing to experience someone using their gift to touch your life in a way that leaves no doubt that God is the one that has truly touched you.

I want Christ to live through me like that.

What a great reminder to all of us in the body of Christ! Goes right along with my devotions that I had this morning! When talking about ordinary Christians who use their talents and abilities, Warren Wiersbe said, “They have the kind of character and conduct that God can trust with blessing. They are fruitful because they are faithful!”
May that spur all of us on to use our gifts for God’s glory! !!
